To find out more about the aircraft’s behavior beyond it’s standard operating limitations (to see if there were critical issues near the established limits), Zenair commissioned a full assessment based on Ground Vibration Tests (GVT) from one of the leading world-wide experts in the field of material fatigue and vibration analysis. A full research team from the Technical University at Hamburg-Harburg (TUHH) worked on this project relentlessly for ten weeks. The investigation was completed and the results shared with the German DAeC on May 19, 2009. The outcome was lucid and conclusive: “No tendency to flutter or divergence was found within the flight envelope of the CH 601 XL”. The aircraft was tested well beyond its normal operating limits and with its control cables far out of compliance with the same results: No flutter. With so many Zodiac CH 601 XL flying around the world for so many years, it is no surprise that there have been some accidents involving the aircraft. After a number of unexplained tragedies, it was speculated that perhaps the aircraft was prone to flutter and that flutter was maybe the cause of these unfortunate events. In response, Zenair reminded all owners/pilots that the aircraft always needed to be properly rigged and flown within its limits to ensure proper operation. Zenair Europe issued a Service Bulletin specifically addressing control cable tension after an accident occurred in the Netherlands in the fall of 2008. Zenair’s position has always been that a properly built and rigged CH 601 XL does not have flutter issues. |
